Konica Minolta Receives Evergreen Award from U.S. General Services Administration
Environmental Friendliness and Green Initiatives Earn Konica Minolta Recognition in Technologies and Electronics Category
Konica Minolta Business Solutions U.S.A., Inc. (Konica Minolta), a leading provider of advanced imaging and networking technologies for the desktop to the print shop, today announced that it has received the 2009 Evergreen Award from the U.S. General Services Administration (GSA) in the Technologies and Electronics category. The 12th annual award recognizes Konica Minolta's commitment to green initiatives, including efforts to maximize efficiency and minimize environmental impact.
GSA's Evergreen Award Program was developed in 1998, at the Integrated Workplace Acquisition Center (IWACenter), formerly the National Furniture Center, to support the federal government's environmental initiatives. GSA's IWACenter annually recognizes the efforts of partners who do business in an environmentally friendly way. The program assists GSA's customers to identify environmentally preferable products currently on schedule and recognizes the efforts of GSA's business partners in the areas of recycling, affirmative procurement, and waste prevention.
"These companies have done an outstanding job in making environmentally friendly options available to GSA client agencies and are committed to demonstrating that green products are a viable option for customers and businesses alike," said Acting Regional Administrator and FAS Regional Commissioner Linda Chero. "We are honored to partner with companies that help to create a more sustainable environment and help build a greener future."
Konica Minolta has developed global initiatives to achieve greater environmental performance and continue the green movement through its products, facilities and corporate initiatives. Under this concept, Konica Minolta has developed exceptional customer relationships by speeding the flow of information and expanding the scope of digital imaging. Konica Minolta has initiated many projects with these goals in mind including:
- In 2009, Konica Minolta formulated Eco Vision 2050 as its long-term environmental vision, which will guide Konica Minolta in the right direction to achieve its future objectives and fulfill its responsibility as a global corporation by contributing to a sustainable earth and society. The prevention of global warming is a core part of Konica Minolta's mission as a manufacturing company. Specifically, management has set the target of reducing CO2 emissions by 80% from fiscal 2005 levels throughout product life cycles by 2050.
- The Zero Waste Program ensures that all manufacturing facilities follow a strict program to minimize the amount of externally disposed waste. In March of 2008, Konica Minolta achieved Level 2 criteria by reducing the volume of externally disposed waste by 30 percent per sales unit over fiscal 2001 levels.
- The Promotion of Green Procurement initiative rates the environmental impact that each Konica Minolta supplier has by examining all aspects of each business including: environmental certification, use of prohibited substances and content of controlled substances that could effect the environment.
- The Clean Planet Program in the United States helps reduce the environmental impact of Konica Minolta's products throughout their lifecycle by recycling customers' toner cartridges and bottles at Konica Minolta recycling centers.
- The Energy Star Program is a joint program between the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the U.S. Department of Energy (DoE), and is a voluntary labeling program designed to protect the environment through the identification and promotion of energy-efficient products and practices. It is important to note that every Konica Minolta MFP since 1995 has qualified for the Energy Star printer label. A new Energy Star standard for office imaging equipment went into effect in 2007, and calls for even tougher energy guidelines for efficient operation and maximum productivity for digital office machines. Even with the tougher guidelines, the latest bizhub® MFPs are exceeding this new specification, and Konica Minolta is committed to ensuring the same for future products.
- Across the globe, the Konica Minolta Group is actively promoting the acquisition of Type-I environmental certification labels, which indicates a third-party institution has certified the low environmental impact of a product. Below are some global examples:
Konica Minolta Helps AMG Resources Eliminate Paper Filing
Scrap Metal Company Integrates Electronic Document Management System to Improve Productivity and Workflow Company-Wide
Konica Minolta Business Solutions U.S.A., Inc. (Konica Minolta), a leading provider of advanced imaging and networking technologies for the desktop to the print shop, today announced that it will support AMG Resources Corporation in an initiative to become a paperless office with the implementation of PRISM DocRecord. One of the largest scrap metal companies in the world, AMG Resources launched PRISM DocRecord in September 2009 to accompany its use of award-winning bizhub® MFPs from Konica Minolta with the goals of reducing excessive storage costs, improving document workflow across the organization, and enhancing overall productivity.
After reviewing the results of an internal ROI study, it was apparent that the company could not only save time and money by adopting an electronic document management system, but also more effectively manage company operations. PRISM DocRecord has enabled AMG Resources to move approximately 28,000 paper files to the new electronic database and expects to eliminate nearly 60,000 paper files by the end of 2010. Selecting PRISM DocRecord was a logical solution given the company already operates on Konica Minolta bizhub MFPs, including the bizhub C550 and bizhub 361, and hardware integration was a strong selection component. By integrating with existing company enterprise applications, PRISM DocRecord ensures that the history of access, changes and updates to documents is automatically tracked and recorded.
"Given our existing relationship with Konica Minolta and the level of quality consistently delivered by the current bizhub MFP products, it was a fairly easy decision to select them as our partner in rolling out this new initiative," said Dan Corrigan, Director of Information Technology at AMG Resources. "As we evaluated competitive solutions, PRISM DocRecord emerged as the most natural fit within our current infrastructure, and the solution that would provide ease of integration and a more secure way of doing business. Konica Minolta has made a tremendous impact on our way of doing business."
Using PRISM DocRecord, AMG Resources has also transitioned file exchange to the electronic document management system with external customers, plant managers and sales contacts. Incoming faxes are sent directly to the electronic filing system and sorted according to barcodes that identify the locations of specific folders. The company began hosting online training sessions to familiarize and integrate their network of external contacts with the new system to further streamline business workflow.
"We are pleased to be working with AMG Resources to support their transition to a paperless office and eliminate their heavy reliance on paper filing," said Kevin Kern, Senior Vice President, Marketing, Konica Minolta Business Solutions U.S.A., Inc. "PRISM DocRecord is a reliable and secure solution that will continue to grow with AMG Resources' business, and highlights the fact that customers can count on Konica Minolta to meet both their output and digital imaging solution needs to improve overall document workflow."

(Konica Minolta), a leading provider of advanced imaging and networking technologies for the desktop to the print shop, today announces the launch of the Konica Minolta Clean Planet Recycling Program that will provide easy and cost-free consumables recycling to all customers. Konica Minolta has been an industry leader for many years in developing best practices and technologies designed with the environment in mind - saving energy, minimizing pollution and reducing environmental impact through the entire life cycle of our products. With the Clean Planet Recycling Program, customers will now be able to return and recycle all major consumables - including toner cartridges, imaging units, waste toner bottles, developer/developer units and drums - for all Konica Minolta models without any shipping or processing costs.
Konica Minolta's Clean Planet Recycling Program also ensures that received recyclables are processed in an environmentally safe and responsible manner - no recyclable items are permitted to go into land?lls.
"Konica Minolta invested heavily in developing this program to ensure it would bring only the highest value to our customers, and we are excited to launch it as a critical part of our corporate environmental initiatives," said Kevin Kern, Senior Vice President, Marketing, Konica Minolta Business Solutions U.S.A., Inc. Regardless of volume, Konica Minolta's Clean Planet Recycling Program accommodates customers of all sizes:
• Small and home office customers: Single consumable items can be sent for recycling by printing a postpaid UPS label from the Website.
• Mid-sized customers: A recycling box designed to hold 10-15 consumables can be ordered from the Clean Planet Website for collection in the office. When the box is full, a UPS label can be printed from the Website for easy shipping.
• High-volume customers: Konica Minolta can arrange for the delivery and pickup of recycling pallets that hold a larger quantity of consumable items.
To minimize energy and fuel costs associated with shipping, Konica Minolta has partnered with approved facilities located across the country, with collection points that are automatically selected based on the customer's location. When labels are printed, the closest facility is automatically selected to minimize the energy and fuel costs associated with shipping. Shipping is further reduced by the exclusive Clean Planet box which can hold multiple consumables.
